It is not often that Celtic and The Rangers fans find common ground in condemnation, however, this is exactly what has happened in the fall out from the Glasgow derby played yesterday when far more than a small minority belted out some disgusting songs including mocking the Lisbon Lions, just days after 2 were laid to rest.
The Ibrox team outplayed Celtic from the beginning getting a goal from a keeper error early and then pressing Celtic high with Neil Lennon’s team having no answer to the pressure.
Instead of enjoying the match they sang the Super Rangers song with its line “We hate Celtic, Fenian bastards, and we’ll chase you everywhere” The time honoured anthem the Billy boys and its obligatory Fenian blood and surrender or you’ll die but it was the Lions chant which was most disgusting.
No sooner have two of Scotland’s finest, let alone Celtic’s been laid to rest than a chant born whilst they bathed in beer in a town square away to Progres Niederkorn showed up and was clearly audible to a world wide audience.
Celtic take a fair amount of slack for singing songs of freedom, but never do we sing songs about lynching people or mocking the dead.
As the blue half celebrates winning a game as if it were a trophy yet again, it shows their level as we approach an unprecedented treble treble.
